Tub to Shower Conversion in Florida: Cost, Process and Ideas
Tub to shower conversion in Southwest Florida: walk-in vs curbless, waterproofing, plumbing changes and cost factors. Free estimate: (239) 878-3404.

A tub to shower conversion replaces a bathtub with a walk-in shower, usually in the space the tub already occupies. For many Southwest Florida homeowners it is the simplest way to get a safer, easier bathroom without a full gut renovation. This guide explains why people convert, how walk-in and curbless showers differ, how waterproofing and plumbing work, and which factors move the cost. It is one part of our wider guide to bathroom remodeling in Southwest Florida.
What Is a Tub to Shower Conversion?
A tub to shower conversion removes the existing bathtub and builds a shower in its place. The work goes well beyond swapping fixtures. The tub, its drain and the surrounding wall finishes come out, the subfloor is inspected, a new drain and shower valve are set, the walls and floor are waterproofed, and the finished surfaces are tiled. Because water is involved at every step, the hidden layers matter more than the tile.
Most conversions keep the tub's footprint, which keeps the plumbing changes modest. Some homeowners go further and enlarge the shower into space beside the tub. Our bathroom remodeling service page lists these conversions among the projects clients request most often.
Why Choose a Walk-In Shower Conversion in Southwest Florida?
Safety is a common reason. A CDC analysis of 2008 emergency department data, published as a CDC report, estimated 234,094 nonfatal bathroom injuries treated in U.S. emergency departments, found that 81.1 percent were caused by falls, and noted that injury rates rise with age. Stepping over a high tub wall is a real hazard for older adults and for anyone with limited mobility. The CDC's fall prevention guidance also recommends grab bars inside and outside the tub or shower, and they are easier to place around a walk-in shower.
Other reasons are practical. Many tubs go unused for years, humid Florida bathrooms are hard on worn caulk and grout, and a shower is quicker to clean. A walk-in shower can also add a niche, bench seating and a handheld showerhead.

Walk-In Shower or Curbless Shower: Which Fits Your Bathroom?
A walk-in shower usually keeps a low curb at the entrance, which holds water in and keeps the build simple. A curbless shower removes that step so the bathroom floor flows into the shower. That helps with walkers and wheelchairs and gives the room a clean, open look.
The tradeoff is the floor. A curbless shower needs the drain area to sit lower than the surrounding floor so water slopes toward the drain without escaping. Whether that is practical depends on the floor structure, such as a concrete slab or wood framing, and on how much depth is available. The 2023 Florida Building Code, Plumbing, treats a first floor shower that is poured with the adjoining floor and depressed at least 2 inches differently from a lined shower, so the floor type shapes the design. We check the floor in person before recommending either option.
How Is Shower Waterproofing Handled in a Tub to Shower Conversion?
Shower waterproofing decides whether a new shower lasts. The 2023 Florida Building Code, Plumbing, 8th edition, requires shower walls to be smooth, nonabsorbent waterproof material up to at least 6 feet above the room floor and 70 inches above the drain. Lined shower floors must turn up at least 2 inches above the finished threshold, slope one quarter inch per foot toward the drain and be tested for leaks.
In practice that means a continuous membrane over backer board instead of drywall behind the tile. Our Fort Myers bathroom page names Schluter-Kerdi membrane systems, porcelain tile and solid surface shower pans among the materials we use. Ask any contractor which system they install, how seams and corners are sealed and how the shower is tested before tile goes on.

What Changes in the Plumbing When You Convert a Bathtub to a Walk-In Shower?
Converting a bathtub to a walk-in shower changes three plumbing items. The tub drain is replaced with a shower drain, and the same code requires shower waste outlets to be at least 1½ inches in diameter. The shower valve and the pipe to the showerhead are replaced or moved, and the supply risers have to be fastened to the structure. The drain location can also shift from the tub end toward the center of the new shower floor.
Florida law matters here too. Under section 489.113(3) of the Florida Statutes, a contractor must subcontract plumbing work unless the contractor holds a state certificate or registration in plumbing. Phenomenal Renovation holds both residential contractor and plumbing contractor licenses, so the plumbing stays in house. Ask about permits and inspections for your city before work starts.
What Is the Tub to Shower Conversion Process?
A typical conversion follows the same order, though details change with each bathroom.
- Consultation and measurements: we look at the tub, walls, floor and plumbing and talk through walk-in and curbless options.
- Demolition: the tub, surround and wall finishes come out, and the subfloor and framing are checked for moisture damage.
- Plumbing rough in: the new drain and valve are set, with permits and inspections where required.
- Backer board and waterproofing: the walls and floor are built, sloped and sealed with a membrane system.
- Tile and finishes: tile, niche, bench and trim go in.
- Fixtures and glass: valve trim, showerhead and enclosure are installed.
- Final walkthrough: we review the finished shower with you, along with care and our one year workmanship warranty.
What Affects Tub to Shower Conversion Cost?
Tub to shower conversion cost depends on the bathroom, so we do not publish one price. These factors move the number most:
- The size of the shower, and whether it grows beyond the old tub footprint.
- Walk-in with a curb or curbless, since a curbless floor means more structural work.
- Moving the drain or the supply lines.
- Tile, fixtures and the glass enclosure you choose.
- Hidden damage found at demolition, such as old leaks or soft subfloor.
- Add-ons such as a bench, a niche, grab bars and a handheld showerhead.

Is a Tub to Shower Conversion Right for Your Home?
A tub to shower conversion makes sense when the tub is rarely used, when someone in the home has trouble stepping over the wall, or when the surround has already started to leak. If it is the only tub in the home, consider whether you or a future owner will need one. Homes with more than one bathroom can convert one and keep a tub in another.

Tub to Shower Conversion FAQ
Can you convert a bathtub to a walk-in shower in the same space?
Yes, in most cases. The conversion normally uses the tub's footprint, with a new drain, valve and waterproofed walls and floor. Some layouts allow a larger shower by borrowing nearby space. We confirm what fits after measuring the bathroom and checking the floor and plumbing in person.
Is a curbless shower possible for every conversion?
Not always. A curbless shower needs the floor around the drain to sit lower than the rest of the bathroom, and that depends on the floor structure and the depth available. A walk-in shower with a low curb is the simpler alternative. We check the floor before recommending either design.
Does a tub to shower conversion need a permit in Florida?
Plumbing changes are generally permitted through the local building department, and requirements vary by city and county. Confirm with your building department or ask your contractor which permits apply to your address. Our licensed team handles permit filings and inspections for our projects.
Who should do the plumbing on a tub to shower conversion?
A contractor holding a Florida plumbing license, or a licensed plumbing subcontractor. You can verify any Florida contractor license with the state Department of Business and Professional Regulation before signing. Phenomenal Renovation holds residential and plumbing contractor licenses and handles the plumbing in house.
